Insomniac-Net ANSWERS -- Friday[42], Oct 14, 2016 [ F - T - F ]
Tonight's Topic: Stoney End
ANSWERS = [ F - T - F ]
Good morning/evening, everybody! Thank you for joining us last night.
We hope you discovered something interesting during the time we spent together on the Insomniac Net last night.
-- The ever-delightful Shelley [KF7TBA] and just plain old LW [K7LWA] (email K7LWA.INS@gmail.com).
(Please Note: The Net Controller's Answers are always CORRECT (even if they aren't every time!)
Please check out Winsystem's Insomniac Trivia Net page.
You can get these Questions & Answers at the Yahoo-groups' Messages Link.

During the 2 weeks we were away recently, we drove from Washington to Phoenix (and back again -- even accidently turning right... into Wyoming instead of Idaho!).
We visited many outstanding National, State, and local Parks and various venues -- many of which we will probably never get a chance to visit again.
Although we missed the Grand Canyon (what?) along the border of Utah and Arizona, we did visit the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert.
Accordingly, we offer for your approval, 3 True-or-False ("TorF") questions about the beautfully diverse Petrified Forest National Park.
Please give us your best answer for each of the following 3 TRUE or FALSE questions, by using the (reuseable) answers of "T"=TRUE or "F"=FALSE.
Good Luck and remember, YOU are always a WINNER with us, regardless of your actual answers!
Ok, pull up a tree stump or a hunk of glass or quartz and have a sit down,...
BUT first, a word from our Sponsor:
Folks,
The WIN System has been hosting the Insomniac Net since 1998, many of you are talking into the WIN System to participate in the Insomniac Net.
If you’ve ever thought about supporting the WIN System, and helping us keep the lights turned on, we would surely appreciate your help now.
You can join, or make a donation, by going to our website “winsystem.org” and clicking on the membership or donation page “http://www.winsystem.org/pay/".
Thanks so much for your consideration.

Question #1: The different colors found in petrified wood are due to different rates of mineralization (i.e., replacing the original organic plant material with silica and other minerals). True or False?
        T. True, or
        F. False.
What mineral(s) replaced the wood?
The mineral silica, from volcanic ash, in various stages of crystallization replaced most of the organic wood.
Minor minerals, such as iron, manganese, and carbon add the rainbow of colors.
What do all the colors in the petrified wood represent?
The various colors represent the trace minerals in the quartz. Iron and manganese account for much of the coloration, carbon also can add black, and—rarely, there is chromium that provides a true green.
Why do some of the petrified logs look like “real wood”?
In some cases the wood has not been completely agatized. The “woody” structure has been preserved and the fossilization process is called, “permineralization.”
Question #2: There are various “forests” in the park -- Crystal Forest, Jasper Forest, etc. -- which are actually log jams of petrified trees. True or False?
        T. True, or
        F. False.
"Crystal Forest"
PANOVISION VISTAS: CRYSTAL & JASPER
"Jasper Forest"
Why are so many logs concentrated here?
This was a large river system with galleries of trees along the waterways.
As the trees died naturally over many years, some floated downstream to form log jams.
The various “forests” in the park are those log jams: Crystal Forest, Jasper Forest, etc.
The original national monument was created where the highest concentration was located in the large expanse of petrified wood deposit.
Question #3: The rings we see in some of the petrified wood represent annual growth rings. True or False?
        T. True, or
        F. False.
Do the rings we see in some of the petrified wood represent annual growth rings?
No. As sub-tropical to tropical trees, they probably grew year-round.

There would need to be a growing season versus a non-growing season to create annual growth rings.

++ FYI OF THE DAY ++  --
A common form of fossilization is permineralization. This occurs when the pores of plant materials, bones, and shells are impregnated by mineral matter from the ground, lakes, or oceans. In some cases, the wood fibers and cellulose dissolve and are replaced minerals.
Petrification occurs when the organic matter is completely replaced by minerals and the fossil is turned to stone.
