2016 commemorates the western Pennsylvania city of Pittsburgh's 200th Anniversary of being incorporated as a city.
Named for the Earl of Chatham, William Pitt (the British Secretary of State), during the French and Indian Wars in the 1750s, Pittsburgh has been home to many.
These include native Indian tribes, the French, English, German, other European, Asians, et. al., and even George Washington in 1753.
Today, Pittsburgh is transforming from the heavy industries (like steel and glass making) into being a world class center of education, medicine, and technology.
Accordingly, we submit for your approval, 3 questions about Pittsburgh, PA.
Please choose your answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each of the following question
OK, are yinz ready fer tonight's questions -- they are easy -- trust me....
++ Pittsburgh, PA ++
QUESTION #1: Some Pittsburgh streets have changed a lot over the centuries from dirt roads, to streets paved with coblestones, then Belgian blocks, and finally bricks. Why pave with bricks?
    A. They are proudly provided (i.e., paid and donated) by hometown Pittsbughers' baseball, football, hockey, etc. sports teams and fans, or
    B. They are a local, easily recycled steel-making by-product found in hundreds of surrounding "coke-slag" mounds and pits, or
    C. They are easier to lay and pull up when changing infrastructure works.
YOU CAN HEAR US RATTLING BECAUSE WE ARE GOING OVER THE BRICK STREETS.
    +++
PITTSBURGH STREETS HAVE CHANGED OVER TIME FROM ORIGINAL DIRT STREETS.  THEY THEN WENT TO COBLESTONESS AND BELGIAN BLOCKS.
AND PROBABLY ONLY 30 OR 40 YEARS AGO THEY WENT TO BRICKS BECAUSE THEY WERE EASIER TO LAY AND PULL UP WHEN THEY HAD TO DO INFRASTRUCTURE WORK.
QUESTION #2: Local Pittsburghers have there own dialect called "Pittsburghese". Also, surprisingly, some of the locals may have problems driving around Pittsburgh. Why?
    A. Many of the streets are paved with bricks, or
    B. Most locals can't read street signs, but rely on using landmarks -- like City Hall, Three River Stadium, or the Alcoa, the US Steel, and the PPG buildings), or
    C. Many of the streets are aligned with rivers and there are a lot of hills, gulleys, and nearly 450 bridges.
WE ARE COMING UP TO THE RIVER.
YOU ARE STARTING TO SEE SOME OF THE BRIDGES IN PITTSBURGH.
THERE ARE MORE THAN 450 BRIDGES ALL OVER THE CITY.
THAT INCLUDES SOME FOOTBRIDGES AND SOME AUTOMOBILE BRIDGES AND RAILROAD BRIDGES.
WE HAVE BRIDGES OF ALL KINDS.
IT IS NOT EASY NAVIGATING PITTSBURGH'S STREETS.
THEY ARE ALIGNED WITH RIVERS AND THERE ARE LOTS OF HILLS AND GALLEYS AND BRIDGES.
EVEN THE LOCALS HAVE SOME TROUBLE GETTING AROUND DOWNTOWN, BUT ONCE YOU FIGURE IT OUT IT IS NOT SO BAD.
QUESTION #3: Today, Pittsburgh's biggest employer is the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which employes more than 50,000 people. True or False?
    A. True, or
    B. False
TODAY PITTSBURGH IS REINVENTING ITSELF YET AGAIN, FROM BEING THE SMOKY CITY OF HEAVY INDUSTRY.
IT'S NOW EDS AND MEDS -- EDUCATION AND MEDICINE.
THE BIGGEST EMPLOYER IS THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH MEDICAL CENTER THAT EMPLOYS MORE THAN 50,000 PEOPLE.
(TODAY) IT'S EDUCATION, SMART TECHNOLOGIES; UBER IS HERE; GOOGLE IS HERE; (ALSO) ROBOTICS CENTERS.
PEOPLE COME ALL OVER THE GLOBE TO BE EDUCATED AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY OR THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH.
THERE ARE MORE THAN 30 UNIVERSITIES OR COLLEGES IN THE GREATER PITTSBURGH AREA.
THERE IS LOTS TO SEE IN PITTSBURGH.
IT WOULD TAKE YOU A WEEK TO SEE IT ALL.
WHAT I SAY TO AMERICA IS: "STOP ON BY, GIVE PITTSBURGH A CHANCE -- IT IS NOT THE CITY, YOU MIGHT THINK IT IS.

No Spotted OWLs -- HAPPY TURKEY DAY!
Good morning/evening, everybody! Thank you for joining us last night.
We hope you discovered something interesting during the time we spent together on the Insomniac Net last night.

On a recently broadcasted BBC Radio 4 Natural Histories episode, the topic was nature's fascinating "Master of Disguise" and colorful lizard -- the Chameleon.

Just by some really weird coincidence -- can you see where this is going? -- the chameleon is also our topic for tonight's Trivial Net!
So, if you were surrounded by about 50 chameleons (like the BBC host was), would the chameleons be asking: "Can you see me?"
Accordingly, we offer for your approval tonight, 3 questions about chameleons derived from that radio programme.
Please choose your answers from any of the 4 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", "C", or "D" (if applicable!) for each of the following question
OK, look around you, and get ready for some personal Karma Chameleon,...

QUESTION #1: What is true about a chameleon's eyes?
    A. Its eyes allows chameleons to see a 360 degree arc, or
    B. Its eyes can rotate independently (monocular vision) to observe two different scenes separately, or
    C. Its eyes are sensitive to visible light (like us), but also to ultraviolet light.

*Chameleons have the most unusual eyes of any reptile.
Each eye can rotate independently to observe two different scenes separately and they combine these two images in their brains.
This allows chameleons to see a 360 degrees arc.
-----
Chameleons actual eyesight is great they can see small insects 5-10 meters away.
They can also see in both visible and ultraviolet light.
[Source: Fun Chameleon Facts for Kids - Interesting Information about Chameleons ]
QUESTION #2: Besides providing camouflage within its environment, why else do chameleons' bodies change color?
    A. Color can help regulate their body temperature, or
    B. Color can be a sign of their mood (e.g., agitated or calm), or
    C. Color can be used to impress potential mates and/or intimidate rivals, or
    D. Color can be used to communicate over long distances without making sounds that could alert predators.

*Disguise is not the only reason chameleons change colour.
They become darker when it’s cold to better absorb heat and they become lighter to reflect warmth when they need to cool down.
Colour can also be a sign of their mood and chameleons often show their most striking colours when they are communicating with other chameleons.
This allows them to communicate over long distances without making sounds that could alert predators.

The brightest colours are displayed when males are trying to impress females or when they feel under threat from other chameleons.
QUESTION #3: What is true about a chameleon’s tongue?
    A. On average, its tongue is twice the length of its body, or
    B. When feeding, a chameleon can "launch" its tongue forward reaching its prey in just 20 milliseconds (i.e., accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 1/100th of a second), or
    C. Its tongue has the highest acceleration and power output of all reptiles, birds, and mammals.

*A chameleon’s tongue is twice the length of its body on average.
Most of the time it is folded up like an accordion in its mouth.
When a meal passes by, the chameleon contracts its tongue muscles just like pulling back the string of a bow and fires its tongue forward like a rocket-powered harpoon, reaching its prey in 20 milliseconds.
Scientists call this adaptation "elastic recall".

If it were a car, a chameleon's tongue could accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 1/100th of a second.
It's the highest acceleration and power output of all reptiles, birds and mammals.
