University Texas researchers announced on August 29th, in the science journal Nature, their hypothesis that details a potential cause for Lucy’s death -- some 3.2 million years ago.
You are probably asking yourself: "Who's Lucy and why should I care how she died?"
Discovered in 1974 in the Afar region of Ethiopia, the fossilized skeleton of a female -- nicknamed "Lucy" -- is the best preserved and most complete (40%) specimen of Australopithecus afarensis. (Huh?)
Her skeleton shows many features that look very human-like, while other features look very ape-like.
By examining Lucy’s skeleton over the years, scientists have answered many questions about bipedal development (i.e., walking on two legs) -- as well as how she possibly died.
Accordingly, we offer for your approval, 3 True-or-False ("TorF") questions about Good Old Lucy (who was found in the ground between volcanic ash layers)..
Please give us your best answer for each of the following 3 TRUE or FALSE questions, by using the (reuseable) answers of "T"=TRUE or "F"=FALSE.
Good Luck and remember, YOU are always a WINNER with us, regardless of your actual answers!
Ok, for you CSI fans, let's bone up on the ancient Who Did It? answers...

Question #1: Since Lucy's arms are longer than her legs, she may have spent a lot of time in trees -- in addition, to walking bipedally (on two legs). True or False?
        T. True, or
             F. False.
How did Lucy move?
Lucy appears to have walked bipedally (on two legs) but also may have spent a lot of time in trees. Lucy arms are longer than her legs, which is characteristic of arboreal primates. Her finger and toe bones (phalanges) are curved like those seen in tree climbing (arboreal) hominins. But her hips and legs are more like bipedal hominins, such as modern humans, and the angle of her knee (valgus) suggests she walked upright on two legs.

Question #2: Although Lucy's official name is AL 288-1, she got her famous nickname from The Beatles' song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". True or False?
        T. True, or
        F. False.
How did Lucy get her name?
Her official name is AL 288-1, but Lucy got her famous nickname from the Beatle’s song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
The people who found her were listening to this song the night she was found.
Lucy was also named Dinkinesh by Johanson. In Amharic, an Ethiopian language, Dinkinesh means “you are a beautiful, unique, special one.”

Question #3: Citing numerous traumatic fractures in Lucy's upper body skeleton, the Nature article reported that Lucy probably died by falling face first from a tall tree. True or False?
        T. True, or
        F. False.
Cracking the coldest case: How Lucy, the most famous human ancestor, died

Summary: Lucy, the most famous fossil of a human ancestor, probably died after falling from a tree, according to a new study. Researchers have found that the injury Lucy sustained was consistent with a four-part proximal humerus fracture, caused by a fall from considerable height when the conscious victim stretched out an arm in an attempt to break the fall.
