    Eighty-one years ago on this day -- December 5, 1933 -- the repeal of the 18th Amendment occurred.
    As many of you know, the 18th Amendment (along with the Volstead Act of 1919) began the Prohibition Era in America (starting in January 1920).
    Accordingly, for tonight, we are asking you how much do you know about the Amendment that repealed Prohibition.
    Please give us your best answers (sober or otherwise) from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each question.
        ++ "Mixed Bag of 3 Trivia Questions -- #30: I'll Drink to that -- Bye-Bye PROHIBITION!" ++
Question #1: What was the Amendment number that repealed the 18th Amendment*, which began Prohibition in 1920?
        A. 19th, or
        B. 21st, or
        C. 33rd

 Twenty-First Amendment - Repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment
"Amendment XXI -- Section 1. The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed...."**
Thirteen years after the Eighteenth Amendment ushered in the Prohibition Era, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Presidential Proclamation 2065, announcing the repeal of Prohibition. Many Americans supported the repeal because they feared that, through Prohibition, the federal government might curtail individual freedom.

Question #2: In order for Prohibition to be repealed, 36 US state legislatures needed to ratify the Amendment for repeal. Which state was the last to ratify -- thus, legally ending Prohibition?
        A. Utah, or
        B. Florida, or
        C. Texas
 From the Proclamation cited in Answer to Question 3 below:
           "...Whereas it appears from a certificate issued December 5, 1933, by the Acting Secretary of State that official notices have been received in the Department of State that on the fifth day of December 1933 conventions in 36 States of the United States, constituting three fourths of the whole number of the States had ratified the said repeal amendment;

            Now, therefore, I, Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States of America, pursuant to the provisions of section 217 (a) of the said act of June 16, 1933, do hereby proclaim that the eighteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States was repealed on the fifth day of December 1933...."

Question #3: By which means did America (and the rest of the world) learn of the official repeal of Prohibition?
        A. The US Supreme Court's Chief Justice announced that all of the 36 US state legislatures had legally ratified the Amendment for repeal, or
        B. The drunk sitting next to you in your favorite Speak-Easy told the barkeeper to "buy the house a round" on you, or
        C. Presidential Proclamation

++ QUOTE OF THE DAY ++  -- from/by Al Capone [1899-1947] (alleged Prohibition Era bootlegger):

  • When I sell liquor, it's called bootlegging; when my patrons serve it on Lake Shore Drive, it's called hospitality.
  • You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone.
  • Capitalism is the legitimate racket of the ruling class.
  • I am like any other man. All I do is supply a demand.
  • I don't even know what street Canada is on.
  • I have built my organization upon fear.
  • My rackets are run on strictly American lines and they're going to stay that way.
  • Now I know why tigers eat their young.
  • Prohibition has made nothing but trouble.
  • This American system of ours, call it Americanism, call it capitalism, call it what you will, gives each and every one of us a great opportunity if we only seize it with both hands and make the most of it.
  • Vote early and vote often.
