    On this day in 1899 -- March 6 -- Felix Hoffmann trademarked the synthetic compound, Aspirin ®, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co.

    Originally derived from natural plants, the active ingredient -- salicin -- which does in fact ease pain, can also cause severe stomach and mouth irritation when ingested.
    With Hoffmann's synthetic compound, Aspirin, these irritations were minimized and aspirin was widely distributed.
