++ Tonight's Topic: "A little Bossa Nova for the New Year" ++
For the New Year, we are beginning a new trend by updating our format for a faster and, hopefully, an easier Insomniac-Net for you on Friday nights.
We ended 2014 with questions about
the most popular music just 50 years ago during the year of 1964?
For tonight's questions -- to start off our new wave of Trivia -- our questions are about the bossa nova.
Luckily, one of our good friends (a local Seattle HAM), "Bossa Nova" Bill [KG7FWB] has graciously helped us with our questions tonight.
(For more Bossa Nova knowledge, please samba over to Bill's website: BossaNovaVideo!)
Accordingly, please choose your answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each question
So how much do you know about the bossa nova?

Question #1: What does the phrase "bossa nova" originally mean (... a little tricky)?
        A. "A new way, trend, wave, beat, etc.", or
        B. "A New Boss is in Town", or
        C. "It's Boss, Man!"
“Nova”, in Portuguese, means new and “bossa” protuberance or swelling, but in the slang of that time it stood for talent, fashion, sophistication, something or someone that excels. So, bossa nova means something like “new fashion”, “new (cool) way”. (From Paul de Béthencourt | What is Bossa Nova?: History of the Bossa Nova Music)
Question #2: Where did the 1950s-60s popular music genre, bossa nova, originate?
        A. Cuba, or
        B. Chile, or
        C. Brazil

The bossa nova had its birth in Brazil. It was born in Rio de Janeiro, the musical city by the sea.
A group of youngsters seeking something different in music and a composer by the name of Antônio Carlos Jobim were getting together in local bars to play and create some of their ideas.
Little did they know that a young man from the north by the name of João Gilberto would cross their paths and take them to musical heights they never dreamed imaginable.
João didn’t know it either, but out of his musical expression, a new idea, a seductive and velvety soft carpet of possibilities was about to emerge.
    This was - bossa nova!
...In the eyes of many, Brazil still is, the bossa nova.
1958 was generally considered by most, as the year that the bossa nova "movement" officially started.
Others argue that it really started with that delicious "syncopated beat" in 1953 with the Laurindo Almeida Quartet.
In the early sixties "The Girl from Ipanema" hit the United States airwaves and caused a musical frenzy of excitement over this "new beat" and the U. S. State Department sent guitarist Charlie Byrd and saxophonist Stan Getz to Rio de Janeiro to be part of this new musical culture. (From Bill [KG7FWB]'s All About Bossa Nova!)
Question #3For many of us, the most popular bossa nova composition is "The Girl From Ipanema (Garota de Ipanema)". What or where is Ipanema?
        A. It was a private island just 90 miles off Florida in the Gulf of Mexico -- which, unfortunately, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, or
        B. It was a popular 1950s-60s brand of Toothpaste which gave you a captivating white smile, or
        C. It's a south-zone neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro -- like Copacabana.

Ipanema (Portuguese pronunciation: [ipaˈnẽmɐ]) is a neighborhood located in the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Leblon and Arpoador. The beach at Ipanema became widely known by the song "The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema"), written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. (from Ipanema - Wikipedia)

Lyrics: Garota de Ipanema (Portuguese)
Olha que coisa mais linda
Mais cheia de graça
É ela menina
Que vem e que passa
Seu doce balanço, a caminho do mar

Moça do corpo dourado

The Girl from Ipanema (English)
Look, what a beautiful thing
So graceful
She is the girl
That comes and goes by
In her sweet swing heading to the sea

Girl of the golden brown tan
From the Ipanema sun
Her swing is more than a poem
She is the most beautiful thing that I've ever seen going by

Ah, why am I so alone?
Ah, why is everything so sad?
Ah, the beauty that exists
The beauty that is not only mine
That also goes by alone

Ah, if she knew
That when she goes by
The whole world fills with joy
And it becomes more beautiful
Because of love
