Some of you may remember the worst US nuclear power plant disaster -- that nearly resulted in the nuclear core meltdown of the Three Mile Island (TMI) reactor along the Susquehanna River in south central Pennyslvania.
Although many "experts" claim that there could not have been a nuclear core meltdown -- in which the radioactive core becomes so hot it melts through the earth's crust and then ejects like a radioactive volcano -- and anything east (downwind) of the site (like New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wahington D.C. and most of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey) would become uninhabitable possibly for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Living then in Hershey, PA -- about 15 miles downwind of TMI Reactor Unit 2 -- LW remembers the crisis-circus, the confusion among the plant's owners (who safeguarded their investors by claiming they could manage the "accident"), the State and Federal government agencies (who were trying to find out how bad the disaster was being managed -- or not), the Emergency responders and nuclear workers (who were trying to keep the disaster from getting worse), the avalanche of neo-tabloid media (who were dishing out fear and conjecture as fast and as far as their capped teeth could flash), as well as the nearly total lack of disaster management procedures or experience.
Despite the seriousness of the event, several ironies surfaced during and after that event.
So, how much do you know about TMI?
Please give us your best answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each question.
++ "Mixed Bag of 3 Trivia Questions -- #09: I survived... TMI!" ++
Question #1: What's the popular name used when a nuclear accident might result in a total core meltdown?
A. "Say Hello to my Little Boom", or
B. "The China Syndrome", or
C. "Dancing With the Stars".
Question #2: Ironically, the US President at the time of the TMI "accident" was Jimmy Carter. Why is that ironic?
A. President Carter was tired of the Iranian hostage crisis and wanted to deal with a crisis closer to home, or
B. With his graduate work in reactor technology and nuclear physics, President Carter had served as a senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf, the second US nuclear submarine, or
C. TMI took the heat off his stupid comment he made in a 1967 Playboy interview: "I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times."
Question #3: Speaking of "The China Syndrome" -- a film starring Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas -- about a nuclear power plant accident: When was it released to theaters in the US?
A. On March 16, 1979 -- 12 days before TMI, or
B. On March 28, 1980 -- the first anniversary of TMI, or,
C. Despite political and corporate energy cover ups and originally mis-titled "The Bad News Bears", it was released only on video tape and DVD -- never in theaters.

++ QUOTE(s) OF THE DAY ++ -- Walter Cronkite led off the CBS Evening News broadcast on March 28, 1979 with...
“The world has never known a day quite like today. It faced the considerable uncertainties and dangers of the worst nuclear power plant accident of the atomic age.”
