Named for the Earl of Chatham, William Pitt (the British Secretary of State), during the French and Indian Wars in the 1750s, Pittsburgh has been home to many.
These include native Indian tribes, the French, English, German, other European, Asians, et. al., and even George Washington in 1753.
Today, Pittsburgh is transforming from the heavy industries (like steel and glass making) into being a world class center of education, medicine, and technology.
Accordingly, we submit for your approval, 3 questions about Pittsburgh, PA.
Please choose your answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each of the following question.
OK, are yinz ready fer tonight's questions -- they are easy -- trust me....
++ Pittsburgh, PA ++
QUESTION #1: Some Pittsburgh streets have changed a lot over the centuries from dirt roads, to streets paved with coblestones, then Belgian blocks, and finally bricks. Why pave with bricks?
A. They are proudly provided (i.e., paid and donated) by hometown Pittsbughers' baseball, football, hockey, etc. sports teams and fans, or
B. They are a local, easily recycled steel-making by-product found in hundreds of surrounding "coke-slag" mounds and pits, or
C. They are easier to lay and pull up when changing infrastructure works.
YOU CAN HEAR US RATTLING BECAUSE WE ARE GOING OVER THE BRICK STREETS.
+++
PITTSBURGH STREETS HAVE CHANGED OVER TIME FROM ORIGINAL DIRT STREETS. THEY THEN WENT TO COBLESTONESS AND BELGIAN BLOCKS.
AND PROBABLY ONLY 30 OR 40 YEARS AGO THEY WENT TO BRICKS BECAUSE THEY WERE EASIER TO LAY AND PULL UP WHEN THEY HAD TO DO INFRASTRUCTURE WORK.
QUESTION
#2: Local Pittsburghers have there own dialect called "Pittsburghese". Also, surprisingly, some of the locals may have problems driving around Pittsburgh. Why?+++
A. Many of the streets are paved with bricks, or
B. Most locals can't read street signs, but rely on using landmarks -- like City Hall, Three River Stadium, or the Alcoa, the US Steel, and the PPG buildings), or
C. Many of the streets are aligned with rivers and there are a lot of hills, gulleys, and nearly 450 bridges.
WE ARE COMING UP TO THE RIVER.
YOU ARE STARTING TO SEE SOME OF THE BRIDGES IN PITTSBURGH.
THERE ARE MORE THAN 450 BRIDGES ALL OVER THE CITY.
THAT INCLUDES SOME FOOTBRIDGES AND SOME AUTOMOBILE BRIDGES AND RAILROAD BRIDGES.
WE HAVE BRIDGES OF ALL KINDS.
IT IS NOT EASY NAVIGATING PITTSBURGH'S STREETS.
THEY ARE ALIGNED WITH RIVERS AND THERE ARE LOTS OF HILLS AND GALLEYS AND BRIDGES.
EVEN THE LOCALS HAVE SOME TROUBLE GETTING AROUND DOWNTOWN, BUT ONCE YOU FIGURE IT OUT IT IS NOT SO BAD.
QUESTION

TODAY PITTSBURGH IS REINVENTING ITSELF YET AGAIN, FROM BEING THE SMOKY CITY OF HEAVY INDUSTRY.
IT'S NOW EDS AND MEDS -- EDUCATION AND MEDICINE.
