Yesterday -- April 24th -- marked the 107th year since the chocolate-making pioneer Milton S. Hershey opened Hershey Park for the benefit of the workers in the largest chocolate manufacturing plant in the world.
After selling his previous candy-making business in 1900, Mr. Hershey moved back to his "homestead" (called Derry Church) to start his successful Chocolate-making business.
However, unlike other industrialists and company magnates of his time, Mr. Hershey wanted his Company Town to be a "real home town" with tree-lined streets, single and multi-family houses, and a community that provided the residents with many services and amenties.
Some of these included a Community Center with Venetian-styled Theater, a (single) Women's Club, a (single) Men's Club, a Zoo, a Museum and various Hershey businesses (e.g., Hershey Trust and Bank Co., department store, drug store, creamery, greenhouse, abattoir, bakery, etc.).
Besides a couple of golf-courses, Hershey also built and operated several sporting venues including a public swimming pool, a sports stadium and an indoor arena that hosted the town's own hockey team (Hershey Bears).
So how do we know so much about Hershey?
Well, it's because LW was born and lived in Hershey for more than 30 years -- and got his first kiss (from a real live 10-year old girl!) during their 1st ride in the Park's "Tunnel of Love"!
So, for tonight's Net, how much do you know about "Chocolate Town USA -- The Sweetest Place On Earth"?
Please give us your best answers for each of the following 3 TRUE or FALSE questions, by using the (reuseable) answers of "A"=TRUE or "B"=FALSE.
++ Tonight's Topic: "Happy Birthday, HERSHEY PARK!" ++
Question #1: After a couple of business flops, Mr. Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. for $1 million in 1900 in order to concentrate exclusively on his chocolate business -- True or False?
        A. True, or
        B. False.
Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. for $1 million in 1900 in order to concentrate exclusively on his chocolate business.(Q1)
Question #2Hershey's first two streets, Cocoa Avenue and Chocolate Avenue, form a crossroads -- with the latter being known for its street lamps shaped like wrapped and unwrapped Hershey's Kisses -- True or False?
        A. True, or
        B. False.
The two dirt roads that intersected just south of the factory site would be the center of his town and would be named Chocolate and Cocoa Avenues.(Q2)
Question #3: In 1903, Mr. Hershey built his chocolate factory near his homestead (Derry Church) because of the large number of dairy farms there -- True or False?
        A. True, or
        B. False.
Three years later, he returned to Derry Church to build a new factory. There he could obtain the large supplies of fresh milk needed to perfect and produce fine milk chocolate.(Q3)
"The critics who could not understand why Milton Snavely Hershey chose to build his factory in a cornfield soon learned that chocolate making was not his only passion.
Hershey knew that he had chosen well. He knew that adjacent dairy lands would provide a high grade of milk for his milk chocolate."

Hersheypark -- Milton S. Hershey built Hershey Park in 1907 so his employees would have a pleasant environment for picnicking and boating.
        Hersheypark Map
Life of Milton S. Hershey (from: Milton S. Hershey, The Man Behind The Chocolate Bar)(Q1,Q3):
Born September 13, 1857 on a farm near Derry Church, a small Pennsylvania community, Milton Hershey was the only surviving child of Fannie and Henry Hershey. His mother raised him in the strict discipline of the Mennonite faith. Frequent family moves interrupted his schooling and left him with a limited education. He only completed the fourth grade.
Following a four-year apprenticeship with a Lancaster candy maker, he established his first candy making business in Philadelphia. That initial effort failed as did his next two attempts in Chicago and New York. Returning to Lancaster, PA in 1883, Hershey established the Lancaster Caramel Company, which quickly became an outstanding success. It was that business which established him as a candy maker and set the stage for future accomplishments.
Hershey became fascinated with German chocolate-making machinery exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. He bought the equipment for his Lancaster plant and soon began producing a variety of chocolate creations. Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. for $1 million in 1900 in order to concentrate exclusively on his chocolate business.(Q1) Three years later, he returned to Derry Church to build a new factory. There he could obtain the large supplies of fresh milk needed to perfect and produce fine milk chocolate.(Q3)
Excited by the potential of milk chocolate, which at that time was a Swiss luxury product, Milton Hershey determined to develop a formula for milk chocolate and market and sell it to the American public. Through trial and error he created his own formula for milk chocolate. In 1903 he began construction on what was to become the world's largest chocolate manufacturing plant. The facility, completed in 1905, was designed to manufacture chocolate using the latest mass production techniques.

Insomniac-Net Questions -- Friday[16], Apr 18, 2014  [ C - A - A/B ] (OOPS!)
Tonight's Topic: "Mixed Bag of 3 Trivia Questions -- #11: "Ed [WA6DNH](SK): It's pronounced FLUR-EH-DEH"
Answers = C - A - A+B
OK -- I hate to admit this, but Chuck [W4ROA] was right & I was wrong!
The SOURCE website for the Answer to Question #3 was NOT the Florida State Government website where I got the original information that Florida does NOT have a State Motto.
Indeed, the State Motto "In God We Trust" was adopted by the Florida State Legislature in 2006 (Link)
So to be fair to everybody, the Answer to Question #3 is really Answer "A", but I will give a "mea culpa" pass if you picked Answer "B".
Good morning/evening, everybody! Thank you for joining us last night.
We hope you discovered something interesting during the time we spent together on the Insomniac Net last night.

As many of the regulars on our Insomniac-Net may already know, one of our long-time trivia players, Ed Knox [WA6DNH] became a Silent Key this past week.
We will miss Ed with his wonderful answers and humor, as well as his never-ending attempt to correct LW's pronouncation of the word "Florida".
So in a small personal tribute to "Ed from Fleh-eh-deh" we ask you:
So, how much do you know about Florida?
Please give us your best answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each question

       ++ "Mixed Bag of 3 Trivia Questions -- #11: "Ed [WA6DNH](SK): It's pronounced FLUR-EH-DEH" ++
Question #1: Where did the name "Florida" come from and what does it mean?
        A. From the Native Indians living in and around the present State of Florida -- denoting their wish for a "natural" toothpaste that was floridated, or
        B. From the Native New Yorkers who invade the state every winter -- denoting "Finally, a "few months without the nagging Mother-In-Law!, or
        C. From the Non-Native Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon who landed upon its shores -- using the Spanish word denoting "Flowery Land"
Spanish Explorer Don Juan Ponce de Leon was certainly not the first individual to see Florida, but he was the first to make an official record of his visit. In 1513, at the high point of the Easter season, he came ashore, probably near what is now St. Augustine, and named the peninsula “La Florida,” perhaps signifying the “Flowery Land.” (from: Robert J. Huckshorn, ed., Government and Politics in Florida 7 (Univ. Fla. Press, 1991). See also Whitfield’s Notes, Legal Historical Background of the State of Florida 215, which states “. . . Easter Sunday, called Pascua Florida in the Spanish language” as a possible reason for the name given.
Question #2: Florida has more golf courses than any other state -- True or False?
        A. True, or
        B. False.
Golf is a popular sport among older adults: Nearly 9 million people age 50 and over are hitting the links, making up 34 percent of all U.S. golfers. Here’s the number of golf courses in each state and D.C.
According to AARP, the state with the most gold course is Florida -- 1,055.
Question #3: The official State Motto is: "In God We Trust" -- True or False?
        A. True, or
        B. False.

OK -- I hate to admit this, but Chuck [W4ROA] was right & I was wrong!
The SOURCE website for the Answer to Question #3 was NOT the Florida State Government website where I got the original information that Florida does NOT have a State Motto.
Indeed, the State Motto "In God We Trust" was adopted by the Florida State Legislature in 2006 ("In God We Trust" - Florida State Symbols)
So to be fair to everybody, the Answer to Question #3 is really Answer "A", but I will give a "mea culpa" pass if you picked Answer "B" -- like I did!
