Sixty years ago on this day -- June 27, 1954 -- the first nuclear power plant to be connected to an external grid goes operational in outside of Moscow (USSR).
This Russian nuclear reactor was the first in the world to be used to generate electricity.
Of course, other nuclear reactors have been used to provide radioactive material for both "good & bad" purposes -- like medical diagnostic procedures and treatments, as well as nuclear weapons and other uses to injure or kill living organisms (like bacteria, cancer cells, people).
For example, in November 2006, two Russian ''ex-KGB" secret agents allegedly killed another Russian ''ex-KGB" spy in London -- who reportedly had defected and was working for the British Secret Service. The alleged victim suffered a horrible death 16 days after ingesting polonium-210, allegedly sprinkling on his salad during a lunch meeting with his old chums (not your usual salad dressing!).
    But I digress....
So, accordingly, our 3 questions tonight are about the world's first electricity-generating nuclear reactor.
Please give us your best answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each question
So how much do you know about Russia's first nuclear power plant used to generate electricity?
++ "Mixed Bag of 3 Trivia Questions -- #17: "You have a lovely GLOW about you!" ++
Question #1: Nicknamed the "First Russian Science City", what is the name of the Russian city where this nuclear reactor is located?
        A. Chernobyl, or
        B. Obninsk, or
        C. Stolichnaya
Question #2: What is the name of this Russian city's Amercian "Sister City"?
        A. Three Mile Island (Middletown), PA, or
        B. Yucca Mountain, NV, or
        C. Oak Ridge, TN
Question #3: Is this first electricity-generating nuclear power plant still in operation today, 60 years later?
        A. Yes, or
        B. No

++ QUOTE OF THE DAY ++  -- Lyrics from "Das Glühwürmchen", known in English as "The Glow-Worm", is a song from Paul Lincke's 1902 operetta Lysistrata
(The song was heard throughout the I Love Lucy episode "The Saxophone" (1952), as it was the only song Lucy Ricardo knew how to play on the saxophone.)
Chorus:  "Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer ... Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer!"

On this day -- June 20th -- in 1863 during the American Civil War, the western, pro-Unionist part of Virginia became the 35th state of the United States.
Originally called "Kanawah", West Virginia entered on the Union side of the "War Between the States" (or, as commonly known by many Virginians, the "War of Northern Aggression").
"WV" was carved from the western mountainous
trans-Allegheny part of the then-Confederate state, Virginia -- essentially, it seceded from Virginia, which had previously seceded from the US in 1861.
West Virginia has played little known, yet crucial military and political roles -- before, during, and after the Civil War.
Accordingly, our 3 questions tonight are about Civil War (West) Virginia.
Please give us your best answers from any of the 3 (reuseable) answers of "A", "B", or "C" (if applicable!) for each question
So how do we know so much about Civil War (West) Virginia?
++ Tonight's Topic: "Happy Birthday, WEST VIRGINIA!" ++
Question #1: In 1859, before the American Civil War started, the radical abolitionist John Brown led a raid against the federal arsenal strategically located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. As the commanding US Marine Colonel, Robert E. Lee led the assault on Brown's gang and recaptured the arsenal. What is the arsenal's name?
        A. Harpers Ferry, or
        B. Harper Valley (PTA)
, or
        C. Antietam

"... [John] Brown planned to capture the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and with the weapons seized there, to arm the thousands of slaves he expected to join him [on October 16, 1859]...."
"... During the night of October 17-18, a detachment of U.S. Marines commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart surrounded the engine house. Next morning,... the marines stormed and carried the building... killed two more raiders and wounded Brown" (pp 126-127)
Question #2During his very first campaign as a Confederate battlefield commander, Robert E. Lee failed even to "bring the Yankees to battle" and oust them from western Virginia. Before his later reputation as the "Greatest Confederate Commander" could be established, Lee's nickname by Southern newspapers was what?
        A. "Granny Lee", or
        B. "Git outta here, Missy Lee"
, or
        C. "Give Up
& Giddy Up Lee"
"... Southern newspapers called him 'Granny Lee' and criticized him for having failed even to bring the Yankees to battle, much less to disturb their control of western Virginia. Lee's first campaign almost ruined his reputation before it had a chance to become established." (p 175)
Question #3: Prior to Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclaimation resolution on January 1, 1863, the United States Congress had already passed a bill a month earlier which required emancipation as a condition of West Virginia's statehood -- True or False?
        A. True, or
        B. False

"... When Congress convened in December 1862,for its lame-duck sessions, Republicans emphatically reaffirmed emancipation. ...Then by a straight party vote, the House adopted a resolution endorsing the Emancipation Proclamation. Finally Congress passed a bill to require emancipation as a condition of West Virginia statehood." (p320)
